Onkyo TX-SR608 7.2-Channel A/V Home Theater Receiver (Black) Reviewed

I just recently bought my Tx-SR608 to upgrade my aging Denon AVR-465. I have been looking at Yamaha’s for a long time and was considering of buying one when I ran across the Onkyo on here and the price was UNBEATABLE.

I was in the process of revamping my home theater setup. I removed my bluray player and substituted it with an HTPC setup with a bluray burner so that I can backup my media collection onto my network. Once the Onkyo came in the setup process was quite easy and really intuitive.

One thing that you have to do is figure out the sitting positions that you are using throughout your room for viewing TV, Movies and such. The Audissey will ask you to hold a mike at an ear level in all the places where people sit to view the TV for optimal sound setup.

Once I was done with Audissey, the receiver configured my speakers automatically even though they are 10 year old Technics speakers I bought with my first receiver. I plugged in all of my devices into the unit, including an HTPC, Xbox360, Wii, VCR (yes, they work with this too) and Cable Box and they worked like a charm.

I even managed to set up the 2nd zone for my back yard which was very easy to figure out and work. One quick reminder though if you are planing to do a Zone 2 setup. The 2nd Zone only supports analog input so make sure you run RCA cables from all of your sources into the assigned place on the receiver. Even though you have HDMI or Optical input in the receiver already the unit has Analog to Digital Converter but bit a Digital to Analog one to convert your sound from the inputs already used. Setting it up this way will not degrade the quality of sound in your primary zone. The unit uses the digital signal for video and audio on the primary zone so all you are doing is adding the audio signal for the 2nd zone.

This way I can turn my radio to listen to the game sipping margaritas in the back yard and my wife can watch her shows on the TV on the inside… to tell you the truth, this thing might make my marriage MUCH less frustrating when entertainment is concerned.

Had to give 5 Stars – Deeked –
I am 42 and installing home theater equipment is not as easy as they once used to be, because of the lack of time and patience I have these days, but everything went very well. I didn’t even open the manual to do the hookups, I just went off my experience with the past 5 or so Home Theater Receivers I’ve had in the past.

After connecting all my inputs and the one HDMI output to my Samsung 58″ HDTV, I merely went through the setup menu and very easily figured out how to assign and rename all the appropriate devices I had connected. In total I have an XBOX 1, XBOX 360, Wii, VHS player and a Verizon FIOS receiver. (I don’t like games very much LOL)

The sound and video for all my devices work perfect for me especially after using the Audyssey setup. Everything calibrated wonderfully and the sound options are great once you are finished.

PS: I also purchased these Atlantic Satellite SPSCUR47 2 Speaker Stands (Titanium) and that made all the difference in the world with my speaker placement. If you don’t have your speakers set up properly, you don’t know what you are missing.

This is my third Onkyo receiver over 30 years, and all three are still going strong. The last two receivers were recent purchases and brought me up to current technology.

Onkyo truly gives the buyer his bang for the buck. It’s hard to find another manufacturer with all the whistles and bells at this price level. My only comment is that the instruction manuals that come with these receivers be written assuming total ignorance. In fairness, most of the manual is written for the neophyte. But as you get into the various surround sound features, at least in my opinion, Onkyo assumes a certain level of home theater knowledge. I’ve had to read the surround sound section multiple times before I felt a certain level of comprehension.

Other then that, great receiver and would highly recommend it to anyone.

This is my first receiver that has the audyssey 2eq. Besides all the good normal stuff 6 hdmi inputs, THX select2 plus, supports hd radio, the audyssey setup was great. The equalization with the mic was so easy and when it was done, sounded so natural and clean. I almost went through my whole collection of cd and dvd audio. I only have 4 of the bic dv62si’s with the ed frias crossover mods and the dv62clrs center channel and a bic f12 sub. Even with these budget speakers movies are fantastic, music sounds clear and airy. Try the Eagles Live DVD audio disk, it’s so clear and live sounding. The tx608 is better then i ever imagined. Great for the budget home theater enthusiast. This is 3d ready too so i can’t wait to see some of the 3d content in the future.
